This publication [A cartographic legacy], awarded the Eighth Demetrio Ribes Prize for Research, reflects on the involvement of the Real Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País de Valencia in the configuration of the city of Valencia’s urban structure. This illustrious institution, founded in 1776, was involved in the area’s agricultural, commercial, industrial, social and cultural development. It also took part in and influenced investigation into the region and the city’s urban planning by giving advice to various public administrations and promoting projects, including the creation of some of the most significant maps in Valencia’s cartographic heritage. The author uses these and other related documents to introduce us to this society’s contribution to the urban structure of nineteenth-century Valencia.
